Cemeteries

This section contains information relating to four cemeteries in the South Wairarapa district and managed by the Council.  Our Amenities Administrator organises bookings and provides information on the cemeteries, including how to arrange burials, cremations or memorials.  We hold all historical records for Council-administered cemeteries. This information is available on request, but depending on the volume of information required, a small fee may be required.

Arranging a funeral
Generally, contact a funeral director to arrange a burial or cremation.

Fees and charges
The fees and charges link below takes you to the current list of cemetery charges.
Memorial and floral tributes
A monument supplier can advise you on the memorial (e.g. headstones) options available. A funeral director may supply you with a named plaque but this is considered only a temporary arrangement. All upkeep of memorials is the responsibility of the owner. Floral tributes are permitted only on the memorial headstone bases. Vase inserts may be provided for some cremation areas. Flowers or shrubs may not be planted in lawn cemeteries.

Services Areas
Services areas are available to those who have returned from active service. These areas are administered on behalf of the Veterans Affairs Department. For information on rules and eligibility please contact us or your local Returned Servicemen’s Association (RSA).

Public visiting hours
All cemeteries have unrestricted visitor rights and vehicle access and parking is available at all sites.  Gates will be locked to vehicles at Featherston and Greytown cemeteries as follows (cemeteries still open to walkers):
  • Featherston:  Gates locked at 5:30pm and unlocked at 6:30am
  • Greytown:  Gates locked at 7:00pm and unlocked at 6:00am

This will search our active database of burial register entries for the Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough cemeteries.  It contains entries from an earlier database which was incomplete, and those entries have not yet been checked for accuracy or completeness.

If your search doesn’t find an entry for someone who you believe to be buried in one of these cemeteries, please contact the Amenities Administrator (06 306 9611 x833) to have the original burial registers checked.  If you find an entry which you believe to contain errors, please report it to the Amenities Administrator so it can be corrected.
