Roads

We maintain approximately 653km of local roads, 389km of which are sealed and the remaining 264km unsealed.  Most of the roads in the South Wairarapa District are managed by us, however State Highway 2 and State Highway 53 are managed by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

In addition we manage things like how driveways are designed to access our roads, coordinate road closures for events or physical works, assign new street numbers (rural and urban) and ensure new roads and rights of way are built to New Zealand standards.

You will need to contact the Council if you want to:

  • temporarily close a road to traffic for a major event
  • name a new road formed as part of a subdivision
  • create a new driveway

Email us with your request and we will help you start the process.

Access Requests

Any work in the road reserve will require approval from the South Wairarapa District Council. This can be obtained by making a Corridor Access Request on the beforeUdig website.
