The Civil Defence Emergency Management of council is now part of the Wellington Region Emergency Management Group.

Wairarapa Civil Defence Emergency Management Centre (CDEM) 
The CDEM Wairarapa office is located at the Masterton District Council and is responsible for:

• Maintaining a state of readiness to respond to a civil defence emergency in the Wairarapa district.
• Improving public awareness of natural and technological threats and provide the Wairarapa district with the survival and coping skills to deal with these threats.
• Coordinating a district wide event.
• Providing backup support to the South Wairarapa District Council Incident Coordinator in the case of a South Wairarapa event.
• Reporting to the Wellington Region Emergency Management Group.

The South Wairarapa Council has an Incident Control Point/ Emergency Operations Centre responsible for responding to a South Wairarapa event with assistance from CDEM Wairarapa office.
